The Hong Kong Young Fashion Designers' Contest (YDC) 2024 is in full swing, with the 10 finalists having completed their first set of clothing designs and their initial face-to-face interactions with the judges. In anticipation of the upcoming YDC finals, these designers have already presented their competition pieces to the public, encouraging everyone to back their designs by voting “My Favourite Collection”, in line with this year’s YDC theme “To Be Seen”.
Many may not be aware that the YDC, hosted by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), boasts a 47-year history of uncovering local fashion talents. Over the years, many participants have established their own brands post-competition, successfully making a mark beyond Hong Kong on the global fashion stage. These include fashion labels such as ARTO. (Arto Wong), DEMO (Derek Chan), REDEMPTIVE (Wilson Choi), Wilsonkaki (Wilson Yip), Charlotte Ng Studio (Charlotte Ng), YMDH (Jason Lee), gnastiy.com (Viki Tsang) and Kowloon City Boy (Toki Wong). Earlier this year, the YDC team recruited students from local fashion schools and promoted the contest in New York, London, and Paris, aiming to attract more designers born in Hong Kong to participate. By the end of June, the judging panel had selected the final top 10 from more than 100 contestants.
The top 10 of YDC 2024 will showcase their four outfits during the CENTRESTAGE event on the evening of 7 September. Masayuki Ino, founder and designer of Japanese fashion brand doublet, will be a VIP judge. Together with the professional jury, the winners of the Champion, Excellence Award, Best Art Direction, and My Favourite Collection will be announced on the same evening.
